Where to stay in Oceanside
The Swell has three completely separate vacation rentals under one roof. Each has an ocean view and a fully stocked kitchen, with the patio, hot tub, grill and laundry room shared between them. Every unit also comes with two spaces in our private lot.
The Swell, Unit One
The one we would choose for a long beach weekend. It has two bedrooms, room for five and a spa bathroom with a rain shower and freestanding soaking tub. Stays begin at two nights.

A beach town you can actually walk
The Swell is two blocks from Mission Avenue, with coffee, dinner and both Thursday markets close by. The pier and beach are about a 15 to 20 minute walk, so the car can stay in the lot more often than not.
A month here feels easy
Units Two and Three have desks, fast Wi-Fi, full kitchens and real storage, plus laundry and parking on site. They work especially well for remote work, travel assignments or the stretch between one home and the next.
The patio earns its keep
The hot tub, fire table and grill are shared, but that is part of the charm of a little surf lodge. Bring dinner outside, stay for sunset and let the patio become your second living room.
North County is right there
Oceanside is a good home base when you want the beach without staying in the middle of San Diego. Carlsbad is nearby, and the downtown transit center connects Oceanside with stops farther down the coast.

Things to do in Oceanside, California
Oceanside still feels like a proper surf town, but the food has become genuinely excellent. These are the places and plans we would start with.
The beach and the harbor
Oceanside Pier and The Strand
Walk west until you hit the water, then keep going along The Strand. It is flat, right beside the sand and our favorite uncomplicated morning plan.
Oceanside Harbor
Head north for sailboats, fishing boats and Harbor Beach by the jetty. This is the place for a slower waterfront walk and something casual to eat.
Surfing in Oceanside
The breaks around the pier are part of why Oceanside is a surf town. Experienced surfers can bring a board; beginners are better off booking a local lesson and learning the conditions first.
Sunset from the water
Take the long way back along the beach. Oceanside is especially good in that last hour when the surfers are still out and the whole waterfront turns gold.

1022 Cafe & Gelateria
Our repeat stop on Mission Avenue. Go for coffee, come back for gelato, or do both in one day. We have.
Valle
The dressed-up dinner. Chef Roberto Alcocer serves a modern Mexican tasting menu overlooking the pier. Book ahead and make a night of it.
Dija Mara
Balinese-inspired food and excellent cocktails on Coast Highway. It is one of the restaurants that changed the way people talk about eating in Oceanside.
Oceanside Sunset Market
Thursday night dinner becomes a five-block street market on Pier View Way. Come hungry, split several things and do not make a reservation anywhere else.
More things to do
Oceanside Farmers Market
Thursday mornings at Pier View Way and Coast Highway, with produce, flowers, bread and enough picnic supplies to take straight to the beach.
California Surf Museum
A small museum on Pier View Way filled with boards, photographs and the people who shaped surf culture. It is an easy stop before lunch downtown.
Mission San Luis Rey
A short drive inland for the historic church, gardens and museum. It is a very different side of Oceanside from the pier and harbor.
A day farther down the coast
Carlsbad is the easy next stop. Or leave the car behind and use the Oceanside Transit Center for a day trip toward Encinitas, Solana Beach or downtown San Diego.

Who Oceanside is best for
Remote workers staying a month
Units Two and Three were designed for more than a quick visit. Both have a desk, fast Wi-Fi, a stocked kitchen, storage, laundry on site and parking included.
Travel assignments and in-between seasons
When you need a furnished place that works from the first night, it helps to have a real kitchen, a proper workspace and somewhere to put more than a weekend bag.
A small beach weekend
Unit One sleeps five and takes shorter stays. The soaking tub, walk to the water and shared hot tub make it our pick for a few unhurried days in Oceanside.
People who plan trips around dinner
Coffee, gelato, both Thursday markets and several of our favorite Oceanside restaurants are close enough to reach on foot.
A lodge, with shared spaces
The Swell is a small building with neighbors, and the patio, hot tub, grill and laundry room are shared by all the guests. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m., so it is right for a calm stay rather than a party.

A few things to know before you book
How close is the beach?
The Oceanside Pier and beach are about a 15 to 20 minute walk from The Swell, a little under a mile. Mission Avenue, with coffee and restaurants, is about five minutes away on foot.
What is the minimum stay?
Unit One has a two-night minimum. Units Two and Three are monthly rentals with a 30-night minimum.
Is there parking?
Yes. Two spaces in our private lot are included with every unit. For monthly stays, up to two additional passes may be available for $100 per month each, first come, first served.
Can we bring our dog?
No. The Swell is not pet friendly. If the dog is coming too, our Ocean Beach vacation rentals are the better fit.
