Julian Apple Harvest Season 2026: Where to Pick, Eat, and Stay

Every fall, San Diego drives east. Up Highway 78 past Santa Ysabel, into the oaks and pines, to a mountain town of about fifteen hundred people that somehow smells like cinnamon from the sidewalk. Julian apple picking is one of those Southern California traditions people do once and then repeat every year.
Here is the thing most guides get wrong: Julian is not one orchard. It is eight or nine small family farms that open on completely different dates, charge different prices, and have different rules about reservations. Show up on the wrong weekend and you drive an hour for a closed gate. So this guide starts with the calendar.

The 2026 Julian apple picking calendar:
Open now (September 2026):
Old Peacefield Orchard — Saturday pick times available to reserve 9, 10, 11 am or 12pm beginning Aug 22 "soft opening" with reservations weekends and a few times available midweek in September. for you to pick your own: many trees bearing Golden & Red Delicious, Jonathan, Jonagold. $5 entry fee per person, 1/2 peck fancy white bags $20. Cash or Zelle only. Closing late September -mid October
Apple Lane Orchard — Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. $15 per person, kids 2 and under are free. No pets.
Volcan Valley Apple Farm — Open Saturdays and possibly Sundays for the rest of the season, 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Admission is $5 per person; picking bags are $20 and hold six to seven pounds of apples, and only one bag needs to be bought per group. Dogs are welcome on a leash, the rows are wide enough for strollers and wagons, and the orchard is grown without chemicals.
Mesa Blooms — opens Friday, September 11. $12 per person including children over the age of 1 year old, gets you a 1/4 peck bag and admission to the orchard. Kids under 1 free. Hours of operation are Friday to Sunday 9am- 4pm (or until the days ripe apples run out).
Julian Mining Company — open on Saturdays 9 to 4 and Sundays 10 to 4, and it is worth knowing this one is different. It is not a u-pick farm. They run a 20 minute guided harvest tour for $10 a person, under 5 free, where you walk the historic orchard, pick a few apples with the bag included, and get admission to the property. Then you are on a gold rush site: gem sluicing, panning for gold, axe throwing, a BB range and a mining train. If you have kids who lose interest in a row of trees after fifteen minutes, this is your stop. Bring a lunch, there is a picnic area.

Opening later this season:
Ranchita del Reo — opens Saturday, September 26, running through November 1. Reservations only, no walk-ins, and no pets anywhere on the property. Later-ripening heritage varieties. Booking is already open.
Julian Farm & Orchard — Apple Tours are in September, by reservation only, and reservations haven't opened yet, so sign up on their site to be notified. Plus the farm itself is open Fri to Sun 10 to 4 through Nov 15 for the pumpkin patch, u-pick flowers, and animal sanctuary.

Harvest dates move with the weather. Check the orchard's website or social the morning you drive up, not the week before.
Which orchard is right for your group:
Easiest with little kids: Volcan Valley. Over 7,000 trellis-trained trees, which means the fruit hangs low enough for a toddler to reach it without being lifted. Seven varieties, no reservation to stress about, dogs welcome on leash, and cider at the end. If you only do one orchard, do this one.
Easiest right now: Old Peacefield or Apple Lane. Both are open this weekend while the later orchards are still waiting on fruit.
Best for a family day with more than apples: Julian Farm & Orchard. Hayrides, a petting zoo, a pumpkin patch, u-pick berries and an apple cannon. Book the Apple Tour if picking is the point, but the property is worth a visit either way.
Best for apple nerds: Ranchita del Reo.Heritage varieties you will not find in a grocery store, on a reservation-only property with no pets. Save it for late September or October when those later apples come in.
Closest to Main Street: Mesa Blooms. The only orchard actually in downtown Julian, across from the high school. Easy to fold into a day when you are already in town for pie.
Something completely different: Julian Mining Company. Apples plus gold panning, gem sluicing, tomahawks and farm animals. Weekends, drop-in only.

One thing to know about the 2026 crop
This is a lighter apple year than usual. Julian Farm & Orchard's early apples did not produce, and Apples and Art is expecting a limited crop. That does not mean there is no fruit, it means the fruit is concentrated in fewer orchards and shorter windows.
Practically, that means two things. Go earlier in the day than you think you need to, because picked-over rows happen faster in a light year. And do not build a two-hour drive around a single orchard without confirming that morning that they have apples on the trees.
Where to eat pie in Julian:
You cannot get a bad slice in this town, but everyone has a favorite, and the debate is half the fun.
Julian Pie Company is the name everyone knows. Dutch apple with the crumb topping is the signature, and they will sell you a whole pie to take back to the cabin.
Mom's Pie House is right on Main Street and does a warm slice with cinnamon ice cream. They open early, which matters on a Saturday.
Apple Alley Bakery is the local favorite visitors walk past. The pie crust has a genuine following.
Julian Cafe & Bakery is the sit-down option if you want a real meal before dessert.
Julian Cider Mill does not do u-pick, but it is the stop for fresh-pressed cider, apple butter and every apple product you did not know existed.
If the line is long, buy a whole pie instead of a slice and eat it warm on the deck at the cabin. This is the correct move.

Picking apples takes about two hours. Here is what fills the rest of it.

How to skip the Julian crowds
Saturday in October is the busiest Julian gets all year. Main Street parking fills by mid-morning and the pie lines wrap the block. A few things actually help:
Pick Friday or Sunday morning. Volcan Valley opens Fridays. Most day-trippers come Saturday.
Be there when the orchard opens. Best selection, coolest fruit, no line at the bag table.
Bring cash. Several orchards are cash or Venmo only.
Do town first or last, not midday. Main Street between noon and 3 on a Saturday is the crush.
Stay the night. An hour up, an hour back, two hours picking. The day trip spends more time in the car than in the orchard.
Where to stay: two cabins in the mountains
Both of our cabins sit above Lake Cuyamaca, in the pines just outside town, close enough for a morning orchard run and far enough that the evening is quiet.
Wild Moon Ranchsits on top of the ridge on two private acres, with panoramic views in every direction. It sleeps up to nine, has a private pickleball court, and a cedar hot tub set right under the open sky. It is the group weekend cabin, the one where somebody bakes with the apples and everybody ends up in the hot tub after dark.

Dark Moon Chalet is a spacious log A-frame tucked into the trees, sleeping up to ten with room to spread out inside. There is a deck in its own quiet clearing and a cedar hot tub off to the side. A cold October morning with coffee on that deck is the whole reason to come up.
