Best things to do in Ocean Beach, San Diego: a local guide
Ocean Beach is the San Diego beach town that never polished away its personality. There are no chain hotels on the sand and no perfectly manicured promenade. Instead, you get independent restaurants, old-school surf culture, antique shops, neighborhood markets, dogs racing through the waves and some of the best sunsets in the city.

Where Ocean Beach is, and how long it takes to get there
Ocean Beach sits at the western end of Interstate 8, where the San Diego River meets the ocean, on the north side of the Point Loma peninsula. From San Diego International Airport it is around fifteen minutes by car. From downtown, around twenty. Pacific Beach is ten minutes up the coast, La Jolla about twenty five, and Julian is roughly an hour and a half inland if you are pairing the coast with the mountains.
Parking is the one thing to plan for. Newport Avenue and the beach lots fill early on summer weekends and stay full through sunset. If your Ocean Beach vacation rental includes parking, leave the car and walk whenever you can. Most of our favorite OB stops are within twenty minutes of the sand.
Our favorite places to eat in Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach has plenty of well-known restaurants, but the places below are the ones we actually crave after we leave. They are casual, independent and completely worth planning a meal around.
Rosemarie’s Burgers
Rosemarie’s Burgers serves the best burger sliders we have ever had. Truly. The menu is playful, indulgent and far more memorable than a standard beach burger. It is also on the same block as Seaside Square, which makes it dangerously easy to walk over for lunch, dinner or another round of sliders.
Olive Tree Marketplace
Olive Tree Marketplace is our neighborhood obsession. It is a small gourmet grocery store and deli on the same block as Seaside Square, with excellent sandwiches, specialty groceries, wine and everything you need for an easy beach picnic or dinner at the house. Order a deli sandwich before heading to the coast, then come back for whatever you forgot because you will probably want an excuse to browse again.
It’s Raw Poke Shop
It’s Raw Poke Shop is the best poke we have found outside Hawaii. This family-owned shop serves traditional Hawaiian-style poke just steps from the beach. Pick it up early because popular items can sell out, then take it down to the sand for one of the best casual lunches in Ocean Beach.

Ocean Beach rewards wandering more than reservations. Leave room for taco shops, coffee windows and whatever smells good while you are walking down Newport Avenue.
Dog Beach, and why it matters
Dog Beach sits at the north end of Ocean Beach, at the mouth of the San Diego River, and it is San Diego's only twenty four hour off leash beach. Dogs are always permitted there without a leash, which is unusual anywhere in California. It is also one of the first official leash free beaches in the United States, adopted by the Ocean Beach Town Council's Dog Beach Committee back in 1972.
What that means in practice: a wide flat stretch of sand with dogs running loose in every direction, a river channel on one side that dogs love and that gets shallow at low tide, and a genuinely social crowd of locals. Bring water and bags, keep vaccinations and a county license current, and go early if your dog is nervous in a crowd. The morning hours before nine are the calmest.
The Ocean Beach Pier: what is actually happening
This is the question we get most, and most guides still get it wrong. The Ocean Beach Municipal Pier is closed to the public and it is not reopening. The city has confirmed it will not reopen the existing pier before a replacement is built, and as of August 2026 the Ocean Beach Pier Renewal project is in its environmental review phase. Funding for the replacement is not yet settled.
So do not plan a walk out over the water, and do not plan on the cafe at the end of it. What you can still do is see it: the pier remains the landmark at the south end of the beach and it is still the thing everyone photographs at sunset, closed or not.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
South of the pier the beach runs out and the cliffs begin. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park covers sixty eight acres along the western edge of Point Loma, and the walk along the top is the single best thing to do in Ocean Beach at the end of the day. The path is mostly flat, the drops are real and unfenced in places, so keep children and dogs close to you and back from the edge.
Go about forty five minutes before sunset, park further south and walk north, and take a jacket. The wind off the water picks up as the sun drops even on a warm day. At low tide there are tide pools and small coves at the base of the cliffs, reachable at a few points where the trail drops down. Check the tide chart before you commit to going down, because the way back up is not obvious once the water comes in.
Find the quieter beaches and coves along the coast
One of our favorite things to do in Ocean Beach is simply follow the coastline and see what you find. Between Ocean Beach and Point Loma, the sand gives way to rocky coves, tide pools and small beaches that feel completely removed from the city. Go at low tide, wear shoes with grip and never turn your back on the water.
Some access points around Sunset Cliffs are steep, slippery or affected by erosion, so stay behind closures and skip any descent that does not feel safe. You do not need to climb down to enjoy this part of San Diego. The overlooks and coastal paths are beautiful on their own.
Newport Avenue and the Ocean Beach antique district
Newport Avenue is the main street, four blocks of it running straight down to the sand. It holds one of the largest antique districts in San Diego, several blocks of consignment stores and antique malls that are worth an hour of browsing even if you buy nothing.
The Wednesday farmers market
The Ocean Beach Certified Farmers' Market runs every Wednesday, rain or shine, from 4pm to 8pm on the 4900 block of Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon Streets. It is less a produce run than a street party: produce and flowers at one end, prepared food and live music through the middle, and the whole street closed to cars. If your stay includes a Wednesday, plan dinner around it.
Surfing in Ocean Beach and Sunset Cliffs
Ocean Beach has surf for different experience levels, but conditions matter. The beach break near Ocean Beach and Dog Beach can be approachable for beginners on a smaller day, especially with an instructor who knows the currents and shifting sandbars. If it is your first time, book a lesson rather than renting a board and guessing.
The reefs and breaks around Sunset Cliffs are for experienced surfers. Access can be difficult, currents can be strong and several breaks sit close to rocks and cliffs. Confident surfers love this stretch of coast, but beginners should watch from the bluff and choose a lesson at a more forgiving beach.
Ocean Beach has a permanent lifeguard station and is patrolled year round. Rip currents run here, particularly near the river mouth and the pier, so swim near a lifeguard tower and ask where conditions are safest that day.
Two practical rules people get caught out by: alcohol is not permitted on the beach, and fire rings are available on a first come basis, which on a summer evening means claimed by late afternoon.
Family-friendly things to do near Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach makes an easy base for exploring Point Loma, Mission Bay and Mission Beach. Most of these activities are a short drive away, so families can mix an unhurried beach morning with something more structured in the afternoon.
Cabrillo National Monument for harbor views, coastal trails, history and tide pools when the tide is low.
Liberty Station for the public market, lawns, playgrounds, art studios and an easy family lunch.
Mission Bay for boat rentals, paddleboards, kayaks, sailing and calm-water activities.

A first day in Ocean Beach, if you want it planned
Start with the dogs at Dog Beach before the crowd, then walk back for coffee and a slow morning in the antique shops while the marine layer burns off. Pick up poke from It’s Raw or sandwiches from Olive Tree Marketplace for lunch by the water. Swim or take a surf lesson in the afternoon, then head south to walk the top of Sunset Cliffs before sunset. Finish with sliders at Rosemarie’s, or eat your way through the farmers market if it is Wednesday.

Staying in Ocean Beach itself is what makes the day above possible, because everything in it is walkable and none of it wants you driving at sunset or after dinner.
Seaside Square: an Ocean Beach stay for couples, families and large groups

Is the Ocean Beach Pier open?
No. The pier is closed to the public and the city has said it will not reopen before a replacement is built. The replacement project was in environmental review as of August 2026.
